Button Mushroom Spawn is sterilized grain that has been fully colonized by Button Mushroom mycelium. Growers mix it into prepared compost, where the mycelium grows out and eventually produces mushrooms. It is the 'seed' of a mushroom crop.
Agaricus bisporus. The white Button Mushroom is one of the most widely cultivated mushrooms in the world.
Keep spawn cool, shaded and away from heat, sunlight and chemicals. When it is not used immediately, refrigerated storage of about 2–4 °C is commonly used. Do not freeze spawn, and do not stack packets tightly — spawn produces heat. See our Spawn Storage Guide for details.
Good spawn shows white, healthy, uniform mycelium through properly colonized grains, a pleasant mushroom-like smell, and no green, black or unusual contamination, sliminess or excess moisture.
A rate of about 0.5–0.75 % of compost weight is commonly used, but the right rate depends on the strain, compost and your cultivation system. Confirm the rate for your strain with our team.
Spawn is a living product and is best used as soon as practical. Usable life depends on storage temperature and handling — follow the period advised for your batch and store it cool until use.
Transport spawn cool and shaded, with packets not tightly packed, and avoid long journeys in hot vehicles. Move it to proper storage as soon as it arrives.

All are Agaricus bisporus, but strains differ in characteristics such as speed of colonization, cropping pattern, mushroom size and appearance, firmness and holding. Performance also depends on compost, climate and practices on each farm.
Do not use contaminated spawn and keep affected packets away from your growing area. Note the batch details, take clear photos and contact us immediately so we can review it.
